iMinds-Vision Lab's research on statistical shape modeling was featured on national television (VRT Journaal, 29th of May). In a collaboration with the Product Development department, Vision Lab has developed techniques to predict the shape of the human scalp based on a few simple measurements of the head. To do this, they statistically analyzed and modeled the 3D scalp shape of 100 individuals acquired with MRI-scanning. The results are valuable for the design of a variety of head-mounted products, including helmets, head-sets, and glasses. The technique can be used, in a shop or online environment, to easily match a customer to the right product size or even for mass-customization, all without the need for expensive 3D scanning equipment.
